Holley Carbs

Has anyone out there used a 390CFM Holley 4160 carb on a 302? If so, how did it run?

Hi, Depends on usage. For most 2 barrel applications you wouldn't want to go bigger that 500-600 cfm. 390 cfm is about 40 cfm more than the standard 2 bbl Autolite carb. I have a 68 Cougar with a 302 and have researched this intensively. We have about 400 people on our listserv and I have listened to their recc. on this. It boils down to the above.

Thanks for the reply. What size carb are you currently running on your car? I'm wondering if the 390cfm would give more low end torque.

Reading through these posts I noticed something... The original question was about the Holley 390 which is a 4 barrel, but the info in the other posts talk about a 2 barrel carb. I have found that using a 2 barrel carb gives me more low end power than a 4 barrel but I lose all my upper end power (past 3000 rpms). I have a 300 motor (inline 6) with a Offy Intake and after doing all the research, most Speed shops recomended a 600ish CFM 4 barrel carb instead of the 390 4 barrel . You will need to tune "down" the 600ish carb so you don't flood the little 302 (or my 300 which is bored out to 302). In my case I am using a Carter becuase of size contraints (I 2nd float bowl on a Holley won't clear the firewall in a van). Don't forget that 2 barrel carbs and 4 barrel carbs are measured differently so a 500 CFM 2 barrel carb is not the same size as a 500CFM 4 barrel carb.
