I am new to this sight, this looks like the place that I can get answers. I have a 1998 B 3000 Mazda it has 78,000 miles the check light has been on for about 6 mos. I have a code scanner, it reads code 0420. A mechanic told me my converter is bad. What does bank 1 mean on the trouble code definition. The motor dose have a little mis at idle, but overall runs good. The gas milage could be better. Any input would be great. Thanx JR

Code P0420 usually means one of two things: (1) that the catalatic convertor is shot, or (2) that the rear (i.e., "after cat") oxygen sensor is shot. A rear 02 sensor's only function is to measure the efficiency of the cat converter that it follows inthe exhaust line, so that's why the 02 sensor has to be considered.
Bank 1 means the passenger side of the engine containing cylinders 1,2 and 3. So if your truck has dual cats then you want to focus on that side. If your truck has a single cat then that's the one.
