Clunking starting off

I have read many of the posts concerning the sliup-joint. I too have a clunk when i press the gas from a dead stop. Kinda a "thud" but it only happens in forward gear and not reverse. I had it at the dealership today for oil changes and they acknowledged a SMALL clunk could be caused by the sealed slip-joint but after driving my X around they tell me the clunk is too prominant to be the slip-joint. They went on to tell me it must be some type of bushing/bracket (forgot the name of it already) internal to the tranny housing that holds the driveshaft inline. The X has been used to tow alot but never over weight. Any thoughts???

Update on my tranny issue. I'm not 100%v sure of what the dealership was talking abouyt in the tranny. I took a 500 mile trip this week and I lost Second gear and the torque convertor isn't locking into overdrive anymore. Pretty much, the good ole' 4R100 tranny died. Instead of tearing it down and having it rebuilt, Im having a PROformance tranny unit installed. I'm not tranny intelligent and I'm visiting family away from my tools even if I wanted to try it. The PROformance is suppose to be tougher than Ford original but I've always used Motorcraft parts, so this is a first for me using aftermarket, especially something as big as the tranny. I'll let ya'll know how the install goes when it is done and how well the new tranny works.

I have a similar issue. I have an 01 X 4x4 V10, and I have noticed a clunking sound when I take off. It also happens when I go in reverse. I got under the truck and noticed that the drive shaft boot has come off and there was a lot og grease that shot out due to the boot missing, do you think that could be the problem?

Honestly Im not the guy to ask about tranny issues. I can build your home from the ground up but I'm in no way a mechanic. I have learned that the support, internal to the tranny, is a sore spot in the 4r100. Seems they go bad often and if caught early enough could be fixed by Ford, or someone else for around $1300. I ended up with no second gear, a torque convertor that no longer worked properly so I opted for a total swap out of a rebuilt tranny. I now have about 1500 miles on the PROformance tranny and it's worked perfectly so far. Shifts alot better and I'm actually getting slightly better gas mileage as well. With what you say about clunk both forwards and backwards it might be the u-joint. Good luck with troubleshooting.

Before you even look at the trans, get that joint apart and grease it. They all thump after about 60,000 miles when the factory Teflon wears off and the boot has to be taken off and the thing greased.

There's detailed photo instructions posted somewhere. Search on the site for them. It's an easy fix.

fixed my clunk

I removed my Diff and greased the slip joint and the problem was resolved.... While I had the diff disconnected I went ahead and replaced the U-Joints with the grease fittings. Every thing is all good now.
