I had my local mechanic do mine this summer. Carrier bearings are the weak bearing. He did the outer bearings as well. I had noises in turns...now no more noises. Its expensive!!!
Around $750 for parts and labor. New carrier bearing kit and outer axle bearings and seals. Labor involves shims for proper ring and pinion alignment and clutchs in the rear. Find a mechanic that has done these! This is beyond my skills to do the job right. He also did rear brakes for that.
