I have a 92 F150 4x4 EXT cab XLT 5.8L w/155,650 miles on it (bought it last year with 126,000 miles). Great truck, still doesn't use oil and runs like a top! But the temp has always run a little warm. I finally replaced all the hoses, thermostat, flushed the radiator, and put new coolant in and I have no coolant loss. Some days the temp will show around the "O" and other days it will stay around the "M" or "A" on the gauge. I have owned 6 F150's and the gauge never got passed the "O" under normal driving. I have been told that I may have a bad "new" thermostat and should get an "adjusted" one. What gives?
Is it possible that you might have a cracked exhaust manifold? My truck was running hotter than usual and found two cracked exhaust manifolds on my I6/300. I replaced the exhaust manifolds and has reduced the temp range dramatically.
I have the same truck with a 302, during summer months it runs on the M. Winter months it runs on the R. It's hard to know exatly what temp its running unless you hook up a manual guage or check it with infa-red.
Check your fan clutch to see if it is working poperly.Rotate the blade several times and if it gets easier and easier to rotate it's bad, if it stays the same consistency its good.
Also check the space between the condencer and radiator to make sure it isnt plugged up with bugs and dirt.
If everthing ckecks out good definately hook up a manual guage (if anything for peace of mind)to see what it's really running at.
Good luck.
