I have a 1991 F250 I have been having issues with. At first I though the trans was going bad. But, in light of what I found yesterday I am wondering if its ok. When you rev the truck in park when it hits 1450 rpm it starts to miss. Thenit will push out a blue white smoke and will smoke more as the rpms are increased. At about 2000 rpms you can not see the truck for smoke and it is missing real bad. I have put a used rear fuel tank on lately and have not changed the filter. This truck has about 166,000 miles on it. I have a lose of power and fuel mileage died. The return lines have like a cloth weaved cover to them and no paint on them.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Bob
I would test the lift pump, drain or replace the fuel filter and be concerned about an air leak. If there is any doubt regarding the IP timeing have it check, it makes a world of difference.
I have the exact same problem. I finally took it to a diesel mechanic and found that I was getting air into the lines and that he tightened the IP up and cleaned it all out and timed it. All is well.
That is a classic symptom of a bad inj. pump, but could also be a number of easier things. Better start at the back and work your way forward looking for anywhere you could be pulling air into the fuel lines. If you do all the easy stuff with no change, it might be IP time.
I've got pretty much the same problem with my 87 F250 with 6.9 engine. White smoke when you rev it, high rpm miss. Plus when it sits for any length of time it takes a LOT of cranking to get it started. I replaced the lift pump and I've cleaned out both tanks. Neither helped. It was easier to remove the bed to get to the tanks rather than the hassle of dropping both tanks and lines. I've bought a used but rebuilt injector pump but I have not got around to changing it yet. Any advice on changing and timing this pump will be greatly appriciated.
check your fuel injector return lines for any cracking. this might be letting air into the system under high rpms and it will let the fuel drain back to the tank and cause hard starting. Also the seal on the filter might be going bad and doing the same thing.
The O-rings on your return lines could be th culprit, I had the lots of cranking problem on my truck. didn't leak fuel, but once I replaced the o-ring caps and lines it fires up right now, no problems since and that was 6 months ago. cost me sixty bucks canadian
I am assuming the pump on this truck is the factory pump. Found a reasonable palce so just going to change it out. A lot of clues where there for a dieing pump but I over looked them tell the trip. Poor mileage less power less smoke. And even the cackle was gone . SHe was just a flat engine. I hope to have the pump next week and put on. I got a 2 yr degree in AG tech so this pump is a easy swap compared to some tractors. Just not used to teh sytoms of a dieing pump on a truck.

Yeap Guys,
The jury is in. The pump was bad. Talked with a few pump shops, finally a shop off ebay finally gave me all the right answers. He has been doing pumps for about 23 years. He had a over stock of 7.3 pumps and was ebaying them. He said it was the advance out of it, da the light bulb came on after he told me that. Should have got some of the diesel books out that I bought years back
I did not think 250 shipping and all was bad on on of the auctions I won.
Got it on yesterday and bleed today. Its set a little milder then my other one was but atleast it will get up to 3200 with out missing and blowing smoke like mad. Just got to tune it in a little more and run the H out of it before trying for tenn. again.
Later all

If you want get in touch with me if you want the guys info on the pumps
Is your 7.3 a non turbo engine? If so then my 6.9 should be about the same when the pump is concerned. Did it reduce the smoke a lot? I've got a rebuilt pump, I've got to make the time to change it.
Yeap it cleared up the blue white smoke down to none. This pump is set a bit milder then the old one. Had it on the road tonight. Better shifts in the trans, but lack the guts the other made the truck have. I noticed alot less black smoke on excelleration too. Does not cackle as bad now either. I am going to run it this way and see what I get for mpg. Then might turn up the fire some. It is a non turbo, running a K&N, filter bowl removed, and 3 " from the Y back no muffler. I can not beleive th differnce its made to it. Bleeding the damn thing was a bear. But, then again just got done putting new filters and clean the transfer pump in a massey 510 combine yesterday. Them ole perkins are fun to work with. This truck was a walk in the park to bleed compared to that beast. Feel free to email me if you need help on changeing the pump.

Took about 3 hrs off due to looking for the right tools as I went. But back on in about 1 1/2 another 1/2 tog et the beast bleed. Still working on getting it in time just right and setting the TPS.
