Hello alll. First of all i just want to say how much I love this forum, everyone on here has lots of knowledge on these trucks and usually helps out.
Anyways, the heart of the matter is the fact that my subwoofer is blown. It makes a horrible clapping, rattling sound when the volume is turned up even below the halfway line. Since I downloaded the manuals for removing the rear panel trim on my 98 I have the installation/assembly part down.
My only question is which subwoofer should I get for replacement? I know that sme owners on here have replaced theirs so I would like people to chime in and recomend something. My listening preference is fast paced techno(sorry folks I only listen to Classic Rock sometimes) music with moderately heavy bass. I am hoping for something with something that is on par or better quality with the original unit. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for your time.
P.S. I would really like the price of the unit and a website to purchase it from because I want to get this out of the way as soon as possible, I hate not being able to turn up the bass in my new truck.
I put a duel cone Memphis Audio in my 98. I wired it to the 4 ohm setting. I tried the 8 ohm but it reduced the sound quality. I sound is much better than factory. I was able to replace it without removing the panel. I took the cover off the speaker and just unscrewed the speaker just keeping pressure pulling out. I then pushed the bolt through the back of the box then bolted new speaker in. I was able to do the change in less than 20 min.
Great. Thanks alot. How much was it and where did you get it from? Particularily if you have the website and the actual model number i would greatly appreciate it. thanks!
Nope. I ended up purchasing an AudioBahn 8" sub. I did run into two problems, the speaker was a bit too "deep" for the enclosure and the mounting diameter was too small. This required me to drill new holes to mount the sub. As for the fact that it was too deep for the stock enclosure, I tried to heat the plastic out but I ended up making a hole in the back of the box. Then i tried to patch it, and now it rattles a bit. The overall quality of the sound is on par with the stock sub minus the rattling, but if i had taken more time measuring I would have gone with a different sub. BTW Does anyone have a stock sub enclosure for a 98 they want to sell to me?
JOHNRVP: were you able to order just the speaker from the dealership? My dealer said that I had to order the complete assy and the speaker was not available seperately. they said I had to order the sub enclosure, amp and speaker as an assy because that was the only way it was available. Do you happen to have the part # for the speaker? And do you remeber how much it was?
I could order just the speaker assy, which is the speaker, foam gasket, and some other minor parts to install it. Didn't include the enclosure or amp. Cost a little over $100 from my local Jacksonville dealer. (Aftermarket sub-woofers can cost 2x that amount!)
Does wiring exist even if the subwoofer is not there?
I have a 99 expedition XLT with the premium system (at least is says premium on the front speakers) ...I don't think I have a subwoofer. Is the wiring back there even if it didn't come stock?
