I'm pretty sure my Torque Converter has gone bad on my '83 E150, 351w, C6. Loud crunching noises from the TC. Are there other components that need to be replaced(in the Trans) when I replace the TC? Thanks.
Since the converter and the transmission use the same fluid...all the metal filings would be throughout the whole system including the transmission cooler. You may not have to replace any more "hard" parts but you will have to have the transmission totally cleaned and gone through with new seals, frictions, steels, O-rings, gaskets, etc. Also purchase a new or rebuilt converter and have the transmission cooler flushed (some coolers are a part of the radiator, some are a seperate unit in front of the radiator, and some have both). Oh, and don't forget to flush your cooling lines also. One other thing...you may be lucky in that the noise you hear could be caused from something as simple as having one of the torque converter nuts backing off and rubbing against the cover. If the transmission appears to work fine I would definetly check the noisey area out before pulling the gearbox and shelling out $800 to $1200 .
Dan, If you haven't already pulled the tranny, here's something for you to check. The torque converter to flywheel (flexplate) nuts have been known to work loose. If they are even a little bit loose, you'll get an awful clanging noise that will come and go with changes in engine RPM. We had this happen on a truck and spent a lot of time before finding it. Try replacing the nuts and tighten them to spec (24 lbs/ft on the 300ci 6). You can get new shoulder nuts from Ford for less than $5.
Good luck,
