I had a heart attack just after ordering the new gaskets so wasn't able to change out the gaskets until last week. Tried it today after the truck had been sitting unused for 5 days and there was plenty of fuel in the bowl; it started in about one engine revolution and did not die. Apparently if there is no leak in the metering block to main body gasket there is no leakdown and there is enough fuel in the bowl to continue the engine running until the pump can begin supplying fuel from the tank (even if all the fuel in the line has drained back to the tank). After installing the gaskets I had to adjust the idle mixture needle valves by about 3/4 turn to get a smooth idle. I guess that with the old leaking gasket additional fuel was being sucked in to the intake manifold via the leak under high vacuum conditions.

Thanks for the update Piffery1. I'm going to keep those numbers for next time. Maybe I won't have to buy the whole rebuild kit. Having to adjust idle tells me it might have fixed the rich condition during idle too. I knew had to be something like that. I just can't see a fuel in carb. evaporating like that. Sometimes I'll find an old carb. sitting around, open it up and still have fuel in it. Its usually real dark though.
Its sounds like your on the mend after your heart attack. Don't over do it.
