The Explorer uses just plain shocks. No struts. They aren't too bad to change out. No special tools needed. The upper mounting points in the back are easier to get to if you take the spare tire out.
Chances are the shocks are not that worn, and you won't feel much of a difference from new ones. But every truck is subjected to different use, so it might be worth it.
Do check the lower ball joints -- those are the first parts to wear out on an Explorer.
The sport rides very hard. Putting shocks on won't help that. I found that when I did shocks on my 99 that the highway driving was much improved (no body roll on turns at highway speeds) but the city driving was just as harsh as always. That being said, if you are going to do them they are not hard to do yourself and don't buy cheap shocks. Go for the sensatraks or better.
