I'm looking for some more towing power out of my bone stock 460 auto. My truck is a 97 4x4 crewcab srw lb. I'm thinking exhaust but any help would be great.
I have a '96 F-350 4x4 Regular Cab,4:10 gears, Auto, with a 460 engine. The performance at 3000 rpm's is not very good. I corrected the problem on my truck using a Stage III kit from Gale Banks Engineering, basically: headers, exhaust, and air filter box replacement. It made a dramatic improvement on my truck. My 0-60 time is about 8 seconds flat.
You will be impressed with this article by 4 Wheel Drive magazine. There are dyno charts to show gains. I installed K/N air filter, and wraped my airbox. Also installed Flowmaster seires 70 muffler. I also installed a Jacobs ignition. I believe I got the most improvement from the ignition. I was trying to improve my gas mpg in the beast! I gained 3 mpg . I tow a 27 foot 5th wheel with a 17 foot boat behind. Good luck, Tim Pog
Tim, If you go back in the posts on the ford truck website there was a a a part about this that included a website from one of the guys . His link to his web was there and I clicked on it and there was a picture. Basically, you take your airbox off the truck and wrap it with insulated foil tape you buy at home base or orchard supply. It is easy to do and takes about 2 hours. Cool air equals more horse power and better mpg. There may have been a picture in the performance unlimited website under mpg part. Good Luck, Tim
