I want to give my truck the sound of a badass backfire without touching the engine. That 300 is perfectly healthy and I'm not gonna change that, lol. I thought about adding a muffler tip to the tailpipe, and screw a spark plug into it,wire it to a toggle switch and go from there. The reason for the tip is so I can remove it for yearly inspections and such. What do you guys think? Dangerous? Stupid? Better ways of doing it?
Thanks.
First thought that comes to mind is "Why?" (Cause you can doesn't count)
Second thought is "All show and no go = waste of time, energy and money"
Third thought is that exhaust pipe runs both directions. How many blasts do you think the muffler/ tailpipe will take before it blows apart and = more money to pass the annual inspection.
I really did not mean to rain on your parade, just some thoughts to ponder.
The tip is at the very end and facing toward the ground. The smoke would be pushing out towards the ground when the blast is engaged. I don't know, just an idea I got,Since im not fast, and the 6 sounds like a ricer above 2000 RPMs,why not make some sorta noise? lol
This is kinda funny. Backfiring blows mufflers apart; why not use a gun to make some real noise. Not to rain on the parade either, but this is a most interesting subject . If ya wanna blow out the muffler faster, turn the key on and off while driving.
Seriously, I do understand. I would point out that if your vehicle is equipped with a cat converter (and most are), and it is working properly, there will probably not be enough unburned fuel at the tailpipe to lite off. To make this work would require some fuel be injected upstream of the spark source, and this would be extreemly dangerous.
Try spending your energy and money on a good free flowing exhaust & intake system. Make that 300 breath easier, run faster, and sound meaner all at the same time. You would be amazed at what a difference a good set of headers makes.
Ok,I did'nt know. So I though i'd ask. If it would require fuel into the tail pipe, forget it. And like you said,It'll probably blow the muffler and cats apart. Even though i've got a racing muffler on,does'nt mean it'll withstand the pressure. Thanks guys. Jegs or summet has a free flow cat for around $50 I might order one. Don't know how Texas is with emmisions on vehicles from 1989.
Inspection requirements vary by the county of registration. From your profile which says Houston, I can tell you that an emissions check is mandatory in that area. My county is rural (South Texas) and is not subject to the emissions check.
Emissions check generally involves the tailpipe sniffer test for NOX & HC emissions levels which must meet the manufacturers specs for the year model of the vehicle, or it flunks and you must repair. SO, be careful with your mods to keep thiings emissions legal, or you will end up parking the vehicle.
Careful on a $50 cat. Often the "one size fits all" cats have small pipe sizes and are restrictive (power loss). Shop carefully and don't let price alone be reason for buying. There was a major, nationwide muffler shop around here selling cats for $100 installed. It was funny looking at the reducers welded in place so the cat would fit the exhaust system. I'll be nice and not say the muffler shops name, only to say that it's a nationwide name and everyone has heard of them.
If you have to do emissions checks this may not work for you but....
Clifford performance offers a headder with dual outlets. 3 Cylinders feed each outlet. Then you fab up a dual exhaust. They claim that the headder will make the 6 sound like an 8. Don't have personal experience with it but might be worth a look.
Million, I've had 1, 1973 buick that would do that. I've had 3 Ford trucks, a 1968, a 1976 crew cab, and a 1976 supercab. All the Fords had FE engines and 4bbl carbs. I could not get any of the Fords to backfire that way. In fact, I could never figure out a way to make them backfire. I've wonderd why it wouldn't work, but it never did.
BTW, after several loud reports in the buick, (some of them while passing cops that had someone pulled over) I decided to stop when the muffler started looking like a baloon!
I had my muffler assembly and all the pipe behind it removed and replaced with just 3" pipe and my V-10 makes silly noises now, but if you rev it it gives a snapping popping almost backfiring sound and that was a cheap way to get there.
