Exclamation First car!! More Power??

Well I got my first OFFICAL car last Tuesday !!! It is a 2002 Ford Taurus SE, and it really is not that bad, it runs good, looks nice, and has a CD player. I got it for $6,800, which is pretty good considering the dealership was listing it for $10,500 (I got the Employee Discount, also my first job lol) And it only has 43,000 miles and I got an extended warranty to 68,000 so that just added confidence to the deal.

Anyway it has the Vulcan 3.0L V6, and yes it does has enough power for certain things, but it leaves a lot to be desired when you floor it expecting results. My question is how could I squeeze more power out of the motor, no not for racing or just being stuiped, but I travel alot and on most of my trips passing will be a big thing (Like being stuck behing a logging truck going 40 in a 60 on a two lane road with at verry little openings for passing) and that may be an issue with this ammount of power. Any help will be welcome, THANKS!!!

The cheapest and easiest options generally will be the following:
A performance drop in air filter will increase the power, cheaply and easily.
A performance enhancing chip/tuner, provides best benefits running on premium, but gains can still be had on regular.
A less restrictive, well designed exhaust system.

I've had a couple of Taurus', an '02 and an '04 (wife's car) and I think the 3.0 runs fine as is. It's not a hot rod, but it's not supposed to be.

Poke around in the 3.0L forum. "Mo Go" is a topic of regular discussion there. There is even a link there somewhere to a page that details how to build your own upper intake manifold, and how to port the heads and lower intake.

Imagine the same engine in 1995 trim haulin' around a family of 6 (three teens & a young one) in a much heavier Aerostar. Passing is generally not an option. Sighhhhhh...

Cheers,
Eric

Well like I said earlier I am not expecting a hot rod out of my Taurus, if I wanted a hot rod I would of gotten a Mustang. It was my choice to get the Taurus and it is what I want, it is safe and it is a realiable, proven sedan. All that I would like is a little more confidence while passing and getting on intersate, not to do burnouts.

As was noted, you might try making it breath easier. BTW, read your extended warranty carefully before chipping it; aftermarket chips can be reason to void warranties if there are problems associated with items impacted by the chip (like the engine block, heads, maybe tranny, etc). I've driven those cars with the 3.0; IMO they aren't all that bad power wise.

Hmmm... I don't have any better cheap ideas than what BigF350 said above, but more expensive would be a turbo/supercharger, or nitrous (boy would that surprise people, nitrous on a taurus!). I have the 03 wagon with the duratec, and it moves , so I have never really had to think about this.

I hate to sound like my old man, but keep it stock.

To get noticable power increases, you have to do something noticable.

I am an old man, keep it stock, the engine is on the small side, you will really have to make major changes to pick up much performance. And, the automatics in those things don't have much meat in them, so hopping up the motor could lead to trans failure.

That paint job won't do much for him this year. Maybe Matt needs to paint HIS car

Sorry, couldn't resist
