Chassis Part Pricing
After repacking and setting the wheel bearings and installing a Flaming River intermediate steering column, I reluctantly determined that yes, after 170,000 miles or so, I was going to have do a steering linkage replacement.
There are six components involved here: 2-outer tie rod ends, 2-adjusting sleeves, and 2-inner tie rod ends which also double as drag links in Ford's Haltenberger system.
Ford's price on these six pieces was well over $400.00, establishing the high end of the price spectrum; J.C. Whitney's was a little over $120.00, defining the low end (a call to their Tech line asking brand name and origin was answered, (verbatim) "Foreign parts distributors."
'Nuff said. NAPA came in at $420.00, made by DANA. 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers were around $410.00, mfg. by Moog. A small Carquest in my neighborhood that caters to a large assortment of small repair shops came in at $312.98, (Moog), including front bearing seals and a jug of antifreeze. I gave 'em cash.
It pays to shop, and Carquest gave me a computer printout estimate of those Moog parts w/price and part number. 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers, BEWARE! I know you have a 10% off best price policy, and I just bet there is somebody out there willing to drive across town and (loosely paraphrased from WWF's "Rock") stick this pricing up your candy ...
