I have a tranny problem with my 95 4x4. It shifts hard and the O/D light is blinking. Fluid has been maintained and looks/smells fine. Dealer today says it need PCM, makes sense to me, computer related. BUT dealer calls back a few hours later and says tranny is shot after tech took it home for lunch.
I have never seen a tranny shot that the fluid didnt show it.
I find it extremely hard to believe I have 2 problems that occured at the same time!
Truck has 103000 miles on it.
Is there a thread to follow and or some history that someone can enlighten me on?
Thanks in advance.....going to price a tranny at the parts store!!@#$%!!
'95 Explorers are particularly prone to thowing inadvertent transmission codes. It was the first year of the all electronic transmission and I think that their sensitivity setting was not right. On my '95 the O/D would start blinking once or twice a year. Resetting by disconnecting the battery was good for another 6 to 12 months. When the O/D is blinking the transmission goes into a limp mode and shifts very hard. This is not good for the transmission. If it was me, I would get the vehicle back, reset the code by disconnecting the battery and drive it. If the trans is truly shot you should be doing no more damage.
95 Explorer Computers (PCM) are dirt cheap!! After getting taken for 127.50 at the dealer I figured why not waste some more money, so I went to Advance Auto to buy the PCM. Only $117 after core and tax! Installed it today, Truck still isnt right, but is much better. No blinking O/D light and no hard shifts. I still have to let off the gas to get it to shift out of first.
Mason is correct about the hard shifts with the O/D light blinking. I believe I still have a tranny problem, but now must decide whether to sell it and bail out, or figure out what it is worth to fix it. The thought of putting the older version tranny has crossed my mind. It is a $5000 truck that I am not willing to spend 2 or 3 grand to repair, but maybe that is just me.
BTW I had tried the battery disconnect to clear the PCM, but it would come back almost immediately so the PCM was an easy buy at $117.
