is there such a thing as a weather radio that has nothing but local weather on it? I am taking my kids camping while I am on vacation next week, and would like to keep in touch with the weather before it hits. seems the regular radio stations only tell the weather about once an hour, and I don't plan on listening to the radio the whole time we are campng. and it would have to be something I can pick up locally since we will be leaving sunday afternoon or monday morning thanks
Another option is if you have an ordinary scanner you could listen in on NOAA Weather radio anytime you like. I only remember 2 or 3 of their frequencies but if you need them they are posted on the net.
Any weather radio you buy like the one in Radio Shack will have two or three stations to select from. The one used most often is 162.550. Where ever you are you will be hearing the weather from the nearest NOAA broadcast tower which will be the weather for that listening area. Which ever station is the strongest is the one for the area your in. The signal each tower puts out is just strong enough to cover the area in question with maybe a slight overlap.
NOAA has 7 freq. they choose from. They have to have some kind of plan, because the areas they broadcast from are close enough to cause interference, kind of like the old on the air TV stations. I've worked at a few NOAA radio sites and the transmitters are usually about 100 watts, so whatever station comes in the strongest is usually the most local. Not the most exciting to listen to, but it gets the job done.
(If you have a scanner, you can program the freq. into it. There are 7, but I just remember one 162.400MHz. Since I know the "spread" between the stations is 25KHz, I'll just add on to my memorized frequency - 162.425, 162.450, 162.475.... and so on. There's not really one channel used more than the others, just depends where you are. I'll find the NOAA site: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrbro.htm )
be aware, some areas don't have coverage, I found all kinds of no service pockets on a trip to Dallas through Oklahoma and Missouri. Iowa is one of the few states to have 100% coverage.
My volvo tractor has it incorporated into the AM/FM receiver, and my F150's CB radio has it also. It is very common now. My Cobra CB has an automatic storm warning system also. Even when the CB power is off the NOAA warning causes my CB to automatically turn on and it gives an audible warning tone.

You can get them as part of handheld GMRS/FRS hybrid units.
We use a set of Cobra WW560's for camping, boating, and off-roading. They have all 7 of the NOAA freqs. in them. The only downside is that the antenna is optimized for the 462-467 band that GMRS/FRS inhabits, rather than the 162 band where NOAA is at.
Here is the NW part of IL, I can recieve, NOAA weather from the Rockford,IL airport, Dubuque,IA, and Romeoville,IL(Chicago) eaisly. I also hear it from Davenport,IA, Cedar Rapids, and sometimes Madison,WI, depending on the weather patterns.
I picked up a pair of them for about 40 bucks at Wally World.
I used to get NOAA on my CB. It even had an alarm for severe weather that would scare the living bageebees out of me when it went off. The first time it happened, I almost had to pull off the road because I had no idea what was going on.
