Spark Plug Change

Hi all! I just had the #4 COP replaced on my 99 F-150. (5.4L) The mechanic also told me that I needed my plugs changed. The truck has 72000 miles on it and it also had the head gaskets changed. (recall). The plug didn't look all that bad, some black carbon but if the cylinder was missing because of the bad COP it would be black right? Do you even have to remove the plug when changing a COP or does this sound like a "job creation " project for the dealership.

Mine looked pretty bad at 79K (original plugs). It has been suggested that you change the plug with the COP due to carbon tracking when the COP fails. My silicone boots also looked pretty bad as well (4 or so were cracked / split) at the bottom where they slip over the plug.
What were the symptoms of the bad head gaskets? Why did the #4 COP fail (heater hoses leaking on top of #4)?

The truck was leaking oil from the passenger side at 50000 miles so I took it into the dealership and as luck would have it there was a recall on the headgaskets. As for the COP going, we have recieved alot of rain here for the past 2 weeks so I'm thinking moisture from the rain? I don't think I have leaky heater hoses, I don't see any antifreeze anywhere on the motor or the ground but I could be wrong. I haven't used the air conditioning that much since owning the truck.
