ok befor i get the "use the search option on the site" i'll tell you i have tried and when your on a dial up connection at 19.6 Kbps it takes forever and SUCKS!!!!
Trying to remember how to adjust the stock steering box on a '58 to get the play out of it.
i remember jack the front end up and loosen the lock nut and tighten the screw but how tight do you make it??
Center the wheels to point straight ahead. Pressure: Very little. What's happening inside there is this: the adjustment screw is pushing the sector roller into the worm gear. Go to far and you destroy the worm and sector gears.
Make a minor adjustment, get in the cab and turn the wheel from stop to stop. Repeat as necessary until you feel just a slight amount of tension as it passes center. When you reach this situation its time to tighten the lock nut and take it for a spin.
If you ajust it and then test ride, make sure it doesn't bind in one direction or the other. If it does, then you're too tight. back it off and try again. It has to feel the same in both directions. If there's still too much slop after you've done this, then it's time for a rebuild. By this time, most trucks that old have worn boxes.
thanks guys i'm hoping to try to take some of the slop out so i can at least make it to a cruize nite about 15 miles away this weekend. i am still up in the air on what to do about it. rebuild it myself or get one already done. going to have to do one or the other soon.
