Stuck distributor

I am trying to pull the distributor out of my son's old 302, but it will not budge (yes, I did remove the clamp). I tried a strap wrench, crow bar, pipe wrench, and even a big hammer, and it will still not budge. Any thoughts?

I have busted more than I have saved when they are stuck like this, but I use WD40 everywhere, and then use a air hammer to vibrate the shaft of the distributor – but go easy as it is soft metal. This works about half the time.

Other than that it needs a cold chisel and a bigger hammer - and a new distributor when you are done.

There is one other choice if there room.. Remove the whole intake with the dizzy in it.. than you can push it out of the intake.. ( this only works if the dizzy stuck to the intake) I know this is a lot of work in 99.9999% of the time. but I have the same problems on a lot of 302 in boats.. I saved more dizzy this way than trying to beat it out for the top...

Best of luck and let us know how it works out...

As much as I hate to, I might have to remove the intake; the distributor is already trashed. I didn't really think of removing the intake to get it out--thanks!

The dist on a modern 302 is tough as it's in the block. Get some penetrating oil like PB blaster or Kroils. These work better than WD 40. Soak it good. Let it sit overnight. The corrosion between cast metal and the steel block is set in. Also the sealing "O" ring is glued to the block. 2 things against you. It needs to have upward and turning motion or pressure applied to it. Try a strap wrench ( belt type, not chain type ) around the lower area you see and tap under the wide area in a upward motion. Don't beat on it or you'll break off the top. A mild or moderate tapping will help. Try to turn it at the same time. It will pop out eventually. I've never had one that I couldn't remove this way. I just did the 351W in my 89 F-250 stick and it was a bear to remove. Make sure you put a new O-ring on and lube it and any place the dist come in contact with the block with a good anti-sieze compound.

Thanks Barry. I put some penetrating oil on it tonight; I'll try to move it again tomorrow with my strap wrench!

The stock dizzy that was in my '84 302 had a place to stick a wrench directly on the dizzy.
