My Dakota has been very dependable, not as good as my F-150, but it's never left me stranded (just under 100K with 50-60 runs down the 1/4, ~300 hp). Abused, but well maintained. Needed front susp. rebuilt at ~75K, and rebuilt the diff. at 90K.
Mine's a 5 speed manual though (nv3500). Would I have bought this truck if only an auto was offered? No way. It gets sorta old with the pro-ford trolls bringing it up at any time dodge is mentioned, but they have had some pretty sorry "luck". I've seen a few that pulled/hauled their whole life going over 100K, some that lived a pampered life but wouldn't go 30K between rebuilds, and vice versa. Just too many of the 30K milers. The odds are in your favor, but it's definately a gamble IMO.
To be fair though, my parents now own a Sequoia (there first non-Ford in over 20 years) after the last 3 out of 4 of the Ford trucks in the immediate family didn't make it past 50K without new trannies (one was on it's 3rd by 60K). The 4th (currently mine) is over 130K on the original. None had a particularly hard life. Otherwise they were pretty well flawless.
Where I live I see alot of older Ford and Chevy trucks on the road, slightly more Fords than Chevys. But I hardly ever see any old dodge trucks, and I have yet to see one that is in mint condition, i'll see a restored Ford or chevy almost on a daily basis. Until you get up to trucks about 8 years old and thn you'll see alot more Dodges, I think someone said that a Chrysler engineer said 8 years designed life cycle, thats sad. The only reason that they sell so many vehicles is because they will finance almost anyone, they have good sales and they offer free oil changes for life and/or maintenance.
In reference to the Dodge Ram and the Cummins, someone once posted here, "what's the point of putting a million-mile motor in a 100,000-mile truck with a 50,000-mile transmission?"
I still laugh every time I think about that statement!
Anything Dodge after 93' is junk. That is there last year for a Real truck. I Love Fords. But a friend of mine has a 47 Power Wagon. That is the toughest pickup i have ever drove. Tops out at 55 but it will haul any thing. So i am a Ford man first and an old Dodge truck man 2nd. I would buy one for a fun truck. The Old flat fendered round cab Power Wagon is the only Truck Dodge made that was any good in my eyes. And the only dodge truck i would ever buy.
DT
Yeah you made mention of Power wagons, I used to drive quite regular, in fact a 1952 Power wagon and it ran 60 MPH and was a 3/4 and it was great, tough and I tried many things with it, I was 11 when i first drove it and I was 18 when I drove it last, that was 20 years ago. So they made'em to last! As far as I'm concerned I like Fords best, I didn't buy a Dodge because of the rumors I'd heard. I have a 02 PT Cruiser, I like it fine, but I'd rather it be a Ford, been drivivng Fords most of my life. Oh ford has had their share of issues over time.
I bought a 97 exped for my wife, 4 weeks later on a referance to
the dealer my neighbor bought a 98 exped. couple years later
when my other nieghbor bought a 03 durango had nothin but
problems after 6 mo of owning it. The only problem with owning
a FORD is trying to find yours in the parking lot.
From what I've seen, the 80's and early '90's Dodges are pretty tough. They may not give you the smoothest ride, but they'll get there. When Dodge went to the guppy-looking body style everything went down hill. Growing up in the oilfield, I got to see pretty good comparisons of how trucks hold up to hard use, and the newer Dodges just flat don't. The bodies and suspension fell apart on rough roads. I am in love with the Cummins diesel, but I don't understand the logic of putting a front end under it that can't stand up to the weight. If I could buy a new truck every year, I might go with Dodge, but since mine have to last a while longer I'll stick to my Ford.
How many people ******* the dodges have driven or had experence with the new (03+) ram HD cummins? Our business bought a dodge 05 1 ton dully because the 6.0 was in the shop way too often. Everyone (even ford and chevy guys) who drives or tows a heavy load with this truck is very impressed.
Hey 76supercab2, I have also noticed a lot of Dodge/Chrysler minivans smoking. That's something you just don't hardly see anymore unless it's an old junker. Just mentioned this to the wife the other day.

My boyfriend has an '05 Cummins dually with the 6-speed behind it and I've driven it a good bit. We've gone from central Texas to Ohio pulling a loaded 20' steel horse trailer, and from central Texas to Wyoming pulling a 20' flatbed with my old 1/2 ton truck and two heavy pipe roping chutes on it, along with many other shorter trips. It pulls like nothing else I've ever driven. The only time it even seemed to be working was pulling hills with that loaded flatbed at 70 mph. The only problems he's had with it so far have been silly, annoying things like a vibration in the dash, air leaks in the cab, etc., but...it only has 17K on it so far so it's too early to expect much trouble. The only drivetrain problems I've seen in Dodge trucks were driver-induced (except for the auto trannys, and they're mostly all junk anyway), it's the rest of the truck that falls apart around it.

things from '03+ havent had time to fall apart, I'd really hope '03+ dodge trucks aren't having problems... also I didnt start this thread to bash the cummins either, it's a great motor, but thats all dodge has going in its trucks for work, unless you wanna wind the hemi up everytime the light turns green to get that load moving...but you might blow up the rebuilt tranny
i had 2. one went lemon law. the other i could not afford to keep after the warrenty ran out.
if i listed every problem, it would take me a day to type up. preety much you name it, it broke or failed
Schmids is right Cummins is all Dodge has got going for it. Trouble is Im not just buying a motor Im buying a truck. The superduty is such a great truck that nothing competes with it. Especially a Dodge. Have you ever seen superduty next to a Dodge truck. It really is lacking. Dodge avoid if all possible thats my motto. Dodge its whats for dinner. Thats the new sticker I want for my truck. I love my Calvin sticker doin the number on a Dodge. Listen to the captain above me. Need I say more.
My business partner has a 96 Dodge pick up. All we do is fix it. One thing after another. The trans is junk, and so is the rest of the truck. A pile of bad designed rusted junk.
