I gotta change the shocks on my 94 explorer. Anybody ever done this before? Any kind of tricks that I should know about. How hard of a job is this? Thanks in advance.
I just did them on my 96. It was very easy. Everything is relatively simple to get at. Should not be a problem. I wouldn't spend the money for the ultra high end shocks sinc the vehicle is as old as it is (at least I did not). Go with a name brand and you should be fine.
From past experience, I wouldn't jack up the vehicle at all. Just slide under it and unbolt the shock on bottom and top and it will just drop right out. When you jack up the vehicle, it extends the shock and trying to get the new one in will drive you crazy! You may already know this, but thought I'd throw it out.
I did mine on a 98 sport. I droped the spare tire and had a little more room to work with. Fairly easy. You may need to spray some lube on the bolts, they may have a little rust on them. Good luck and lets us know how it went.
Are you doing front, rear, or both? When I did my front shocks, the mounting bolt on the radius arm was so rusty that I ended up twisting the shock mount off. If this happens, there are a couple of options, just be aware that "by the book", you would need to replace the entire radius arm.
