1983 computer assistance

I have a 1983 F-150 with the 351W, and the 7200 VV carb. I need a wiring layout diagram for the emission control system. I have the 1984 F-150 shop manuals, etc, and they are nothing like what I have.

Can anybody help me on this? Also, it is running the Dura-spark III system. I'm fighting the computer. It is constantly adjusting the timing to waay-advanced settings. It is fine when cold, but goes wild when it heats up.

Also looking for a DS-II distributor to fit the 351W. Must have a vaccuum advance.

Thanks!

I don't know how long you have been fighting this duraspark III system, but the above would be what I would do to get rid of all your problems. Along with the dist, I would buy a aftermarket 4bbl manifold and a little holley 600 with vacuum secondaries.

I am all for keeping stuff original, but this system was not one of Ford's better ideas.

This DS-III sucks. Timing likes to go high when you are on the highways around here. I have, I think, a new DS-II module sitting here.

Thats why I want to get the wiring diagrams. I want to use what I can in the current wiring system.

The diagrams I have access to don't seem to have the DSIII system in them either.

If you go with the DSII dist, I am thinking you really need to go with another carb too. I am thinking the carb you have now may have a mixture solenoid that the computer controls, so I don't know if it would run right. The computer gets engine rpm info from the DSIII dist, and that would be missing when you put the DSII dist in.

I am not sure if a regular 2bbl will fit on your manifold, but if you even get a 2bbl from the early 70's up, it is still calibrated for emissions stuff. A 60's style 2bbl would work good, but if you can afford it, the 4bbl works much better. If you look around, you may be able to find a factory 4bbl manifold. They work well too.

When you convert it all over, I am thinking the only wiring you will need will be for the DSII box. I have a generic diagram I made that works on older vehicles, and it will work for yours too. The only wire you really need to find is the hot in run wire to the module you have now. The only thing I am not sure of is if you have the resistor or not. When you get it all hooked up and running, you can check the voltage on the coil +. If it's around 12 volts, you know you do not have a resistor, and you need to add one in.

All that other wiring you should not need.

I should have stated this earlier: The truck is set up for the VV carb. I found one and installed it. The computer ran it rich all the time when it got warmed up.

I have done what you said. Got a Holley 2bbl that fit the VV manifold, and bought an electric choke for it. Engine runs so much better with this carb... BUT the duraspark has got to go.
