over charging issue

I have a over charging issue with my 89 f 250 7.3L , at idle 750 rpms am getting 15.5v at the batteries with full load (lights on high beams on blower at high speed, radio cranked up, 2 600w amps) engine at 2000 rpms 16.8v with same load. with every thing off at idle 17.9 v and the dash gage bonces back and forth and the batt light blinks. i have replaced the regulator with no results. then replaced it with aother one and no change, i also have cleaned all the connections on the alt and regulator and both grounds and on both batteries, and on the starter relay, batteries are 2 months old and the age of the alt is unkown.. do you think the alt is bad or am i getting a bad bunch or regulators?

I think your system should be wired like below.

If so, take your meter and read the voltage on the "A" terminal where it goes into the regulator. You should have your high voltage readings that you got when reading the battery. If you don't, then check the wiring for the "A" wire.

The "A" wire is what the regulator uses to monitor the system voltage. The regulator takes the info it gets from "A" and then adjusts the voltage on the "F" terminal to adjust the alt output.

mine is wired diffrently 4 wires on the regulator , and the 2 16gage wires from the alt go directly to the regulator i checked the voltage at "a" at the regulator and i have battery voltage 15.6 v

Diesel250, Try this, it cost next to nothing and doesn't take long.

Run a new ground from alt. body, to frame or body part such as fender.
My 1985 had this problem and it took awhile to find the problem. Everywhere I searched I found undercharging problems but not overcharging.

I hooked mine on one of the post's on the back of alt.(it's like one of the post's where the alt. is assembled, not where a wire would hook up)

The above is good advice. If the regulator is not grounded properly, it can't get a good reference voltage to control the alternator.

it makes a lot of sence because my fenders are rusted out, so im gona check the resistance between the alt, reg, and batt so if its high ill be bonding them all together
