just put in the sonnex kit. I swear my tranny only one gear. going from 1st to 2nd I can't feel a thing. I was unsure about it, But for fifty bucks and a fluid change. It's well worth the money.
From my understanding the sonnax valve kit is designed to increase line pressure, resulting in firmer shifts, ultimately reducing tranny "slipping" and increasing longevity.
I did the valve, springs and put a mag-hytek tranny pan on. Springs along with the valve made a big difference. There's no hesitation at all inbetween shifts, justs hits the next gear.
The Sonnax valve is a replacement for a factory valve that gets worn and has some leakage, which allows somewhat unpredictable shift points, though not drastic. The older the trans, the more unpredictable. At any rate, the shifts don't become WILDLY unpredictable, but the Sonnax valve makes they very stable.
The Tricumulator (three accumulators) springs raise the regulated line pressure for the three shifts to give them a much more positive feel.
I did mine last fall, and I really like the way the tranny shifts as a result. After a while, you couldn't imagine going back to the old, mushy, shifts.
After dropping the trans pan, you take a few bolts out and drop down a small (8"x 12") casting. You remove four clips from it, using a bent paperclip or wire. There are three springs to be added, and a small plunger to be taken out and replaced. Then the clips get re-installed, the casting bolted back in place, and the pan re-installed. Fill with fluid per instructions, and viola!
There are at least three illustrated sets of instructions available on the web if you do a Google search. Look them over. If you don't feel comfortable with the job, buy a case of beer and invite a mechanically-inclined friend over for a Saturday morning. If you're VERY **** about cleanliness (you should be when dealing with hydraulic systems) this will take you a couple of hours, at most. After doing it once, you could do it again in twenty minutes, start to finish.
Thanks pop I'm trying my best to learn the basic mechnanic work between this forum and a couple of books the basic maintance is simple. I'm determined to take care of the ol tranny I know that's about the only major item on the PSD we need to worry about.
yeah... ditto on the thanks springerpop... i think i'm gonna do this when i change my tranny fluid... should be a lot less mess if you pump out most of the fluid before you remove the pan..?
