I am getting ready to replace my fuel filter for the first time since I bought my 99 7.3L. Is their anything special to it other than out with the old, in with the new? Will air get in their and have to bled out or anything that I going to make the truck run different? What should I expect or will this be a simple change?
THANKS!!!!
Filter change is pretty easy. Drain the housing when you replace the filter and clean the bottom out. Make sure that the bottom o-ring on the filter didn't stay in the bottom of the housing. If you cycle your ignition to the run position about 8 times without cranking the engine over, it will refill the fuel bowl. Hope it helps!
Max...to drain the housing what is the best way to do that? Can I do that by using the yellow handle for the water drain prodecure to accomplish what I need? If not, what would be the best?
yes just open the yellow water drain. Oil filter strap wrench also helps open the cap, don't use a screwdriver you may break the cap. Also, use a paint stick or something to index the cap so when you replace it it goes back on without over or under tightening it.

Colt....you mean use the paint stirrer so that when it breaks it is as tight as it is supposed to be....a way NOT TO OVER-TORQUE it right?
I think he meant to use a paint stick (like a marker, gease pencil, etc...) to mark the housing and lid to get it back in the same place. I've never done that before, but it may work...

Humm-->Never have undertaken this maintenance yet and have never given that one a thought.
Medic,
I did a search on this forum about 3 months ago and recieved a step by step procedure. It's very easy to replace and a couple of tips I recieved from the forum was this... when putting the new filter in do it slowly and the air will bubble to the top as you place the new filter in the housing, which it did very well. Also I was advised to fill the bowl with diesel fuel treatment such as kleen in stead of diesel to lub the injectors directly. I did these two steps and she started right up fist crank. hope this helps

Medic,
From my print off the title is "fuel filter change for an idiot." Diesel Dog was one of the tread posters that had a lot of expierence. I purchased my filter at Advanced Auto it was around 20 bucks and came with the whole outfit, filter and black screw on top. If you buy your filter this was keep your factory lid in case you want to just purchase filters later.
grease pen or some type of marker, welding shops sell paint sticks, they are paint pens really, to mark the position of the cap so when you tighten it will be in same position and presumably not over torqued.
