Question Loose Steering Wheel

I'm a new user and own a 1997 F 150 4x4 and recently bought a 1998 F250 4x4. I had an inspection done prior to buying the F250 and as it's an old work truck I know some of it's history.

Front End - Tie rod ends were done previously, inspection said upper and lower ball joints, I intend to do those.

Loose steering - previous driver complained of tight steering, he said it was almost like manual steering sometimes until to the point when he heard a pop, now the steering wheel is quite loose. Mechanic said it could be the steering column. I've never worked with the air bag but need to fix this to et insurance.

The 5 speed manual transmission slips out of fifth gear, a rebuilt tranmission was put in 1 year and two weeks ago, warranty was for one year. (Do they design them that way? ). Can it be fixed without replacement.

Any help you can give me I'd appreciate, I've followed some excellent tips on the lower ball joints already.

The steering shaft in between the upper column and the steering box wears out sometimes. It just has one bolt holding it on at the top, inside the cab, and one at the box. If it's worn you should be able to feel play in the shaft where is slides together, sorta under the brake master cylinder area.
I think I'd get in touch with the transmission rebuilder and see if they can do anything for you because it's so close to still having warranty. I'd suspect a synchro/shift fork problem.

Thanks

The steering column is uncharted territory for me and the air bag concerns me, I've read in several places to disconnect the negative battery cable so the air bag doesn't deploy accidentally.

I expect careful handling is required with the air bag but get the impression R and R is nothing to be afraid of.

This wheel moves about 1/2' to 3/4" in all directions so I'll take it apart to see whats wrong and probably learn something in the process.

Just disconnect the battery for a few minutes before you start pulling anything apart.
When you have the airbag out set it outside the truck, facing up.
