While driving my 70f100 there is a vibration that is kind of a surging. I know that it could possibly be a out of balanced tire but if it isnt could it be anything behind my tranny. If so what? I just replaced my tierods and drag links and it is still doing it. My front bearings are also in shape.
What would I be looking for? I have looked them over and greased them up pretty good. I have never changed the u-joints in the 5 years I owned it and they probably have never been changed by anyone else. I will try to change them out soon.
The best way to check u-joints is to remove the drive line and flex each joint in all directions. They should move easily and smoothly. A joint may look good and be tight and still be worn out or locked up. This is the usuall colprit when you have a vibration in the drive train. Other things to look at are your wheels is there any mud built up on them. Have you had them balanced and rotated lately.
If a U-joint is bad enough to cause vibration you can often even grab the driveshaft and wiggle it and see some play at the yoke. Hooket Bob is right, this is most likely cause of the vibration. 5 years is a long time to go on 1 set of U-joints!
I had a driveline vibration in my '86 F150 [5.0 auto] and I replaced all of the u-joints in my two piece driveshaft. Didn't help at all. Then I had a custom built one piece driveshaft made and eliminated the center bearing. No difference. The vibration turned out to be worn pinion bearings in my 8.8 rearend. Grab the rear u-joint and push and pull on it vertically. There shouldn't be any play in the u-joint flange [that is directly connected to the pinion gear]. I never bothered to fix it. It ran that way from 140-k to 190-k when I sold it.
