VIN # vs. serial #

On my 1976 F-250, the previous owner replaced the doors. The original VIN tag is still on the door jamb, but the serial # is obviously gone with the original doors. Many replacement parts reference to a particular serial # split. Is there some reference somewhere that you can obtain the serial # if you have the VIN?

Its the last 6 digits of the VIN, starts with a letter sometimes.

Check the frame right side top rail between the firewall & cab ,it is stamped in the metal.

The last 6 digits includes the date code in the Vin#.

The last 6 digits of the VIN is the serial number.

In the LMC catalog, for instance, it always refers to serial numbers for F-250 4X4s as starting with a "Y". My VIN number does not have a "Y" in it anywhere, the last letter before the numbers is an "A". What is the significance of the "Y"?
