Thanks to all who responded to my previous posting...it was extremely helpful. I wasn't able to view the picture posted by bhmadsen...permission ploblems with webshots. I am in the process of ordering from international a couple of sensors. They need the serial number from my engine to send me the correct part. I have looked all over it and can not find it!
Ford tells me they can't cross reference vin to serial number except at a dealer, and the dealer tells me that the number on the valve cover (1823585 C1) is the serial number; international disagrees and can't reference...? So, how did you order the CPS from international? They state there is a cutoff of 375549 to determine which CPS I need. Any advice is appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-02 AT 04:27 AM (EST)]There should be a label at the front of the drivers side valve cover that has the serial number on it. If that label is gone the serial number is stamped on the block just to the rear of where the oil cooler bolts on. It will be prefixed with (7.4JU2U) then a seven digit serial number.
(I believe the following information is correct) The first year for the Power Stroke is the only one with a different cam sensor. Beginning in '95 they gold plated the terminals in the wiring harness and changed the material that the terminals in the cam sensor are made out of and, as far as I know, that is the only difference in the cam sensors. So unless you have a '94 they are all the same.
If you tell me what year your truck is I can probably tell you if 1823585 is the serial number or not. If that is the correct serial number then your truck is probably a 2002.
Please ignore the previous post -- I didn't know what I was talking about!
The following is correct: There have been 7 revisions to the cam sensor since the beginning but as of now there are only 2 cam sensors available as replacement parts. For engine serial numbers from 000500 (the first regular production engine built) to and including 375548 takes part number 1825899C99 which has tin plated terminals to match the terminal plating of the plug in the wiring harness. Beginning with serial number 375549 which was built July 26, 1996, the correct part number is 1825899C93 (gold plated terminals). Here is a quote from the anthology from the Ford update manual: "The camshaft position sensor circuitry has been updated to be less sensitive of clearance to the trigger wheel."
As you can see the differences are the suffix (C99 or C93) which appears at the front of the cam sensor plug in. These part numbers are Navistar numbers. Ford probably has a different numbering system but the Navistar number appears on the cam sensor. If you are buying a genuine Ford or Navistar cam sensor (and paying their extortion price) make sure you get the latest version as described above.
NAPA has them and some of the other auto parts stores as well.
I've also heard Auto Zone has a program to "reflash" your computer (in leiu of installing a chip) to get you some more horse power, etc.
Thanks. Ford charges $162, autozone $164 (Wells product), Napa not sure, Big A $250 (can't remember mfg)...International $82.08. I did get the C99, from international. They wanted to sell me a kit for "proper spacing" but I would have had to purchase a special tool to measure the "space" between the sensor and the cap.
I should get them next week, and will install. BTW, took the advice and bought two. Will have to stock the beer for task.
