Question original motor?

hey guys! im new to the site and need some help.
i am going to be working on a friends 64 f100 and was told that it may not be the factory engine for that truck. the engine in it now is a straight six, and does look to be very old. it does not look like any modification was done to the engine mounts or wiring, as the engine seems to be stock to me. i was wondering how could i tell, would i have to look for the vin #? and where are they? also what engines were offered that year? i am also looking for a rotor, condenser and plugs for this engine. pm me if you need any more information. thanks

Six bangers were the 223 or 262. 223 was most often found in the '64 and the 262 was much less common. the numbers u need are on the drivers door. If you post then here someone will reply with everything you need regarding you truck.

Smile Vin# locations.

Hi 64f100guy, welcome to FTE, from Okla. I have 64 f-100 also. Vin# found on drivers door, also passenger side top of frame near wheel and just to rear near front cab mount passenger side , these three numbers should match each other, only numbers on motor are casting numbers below exhaust manifold which only give you year motor block was cast.

Talking i ran the vin#

yeah i thought about the vin # only minutes after posting! haha yeah well i ran it and it had the little 223 cid straight six. however, i will check the code on the engine block to be sure it is from the same year just to be safe, since there is absolutely no history on the truck. thanks

What is your vin#?

Just curious differance when cars were made, F10JK454069, the casting on my motor is C3AE 6015 AC so I actually had a 63 engine put on 64 frame or the engine replaced at some point in time, really no telling.

I recently needed to replace the points and condenser in my 223. Ford stopped making the 223 in '64. Pep Boys did not have a parts schedule back to '64. I took a shot at buying the points and condenser for the earliest F-100 240 six that they had a schedule for. The points matched the set that was in the distributor of the '63 223 in my truck. Maybe somebody can confirm that the 240 six points, condenser and plugs are officially interchangeable with the 223. Looks to me like they are.

Yes, the points and condenser are the same. As for the casting on the block, Being that late, the last major changes were made in 63, so being a 64 truck, you'd see a 63 casting number on the block. Ford does not make casting number changes from year to year. GM does that, not Ford. Ford doesn't have matching number like GM does either. technically, there's no way to verify the exact year of the block, other than it's a 63 or later casting. Since the 223-262 ended in 64, It's a good chance it's original, but remember, someone could have transplanted a engine from a 63-64 car or truck at a later date and since you have no paper trail on it, you never know if it's original or not. The best you can say is it's right for the era and not a pre 63 engine in there. Since it's a C3AE casting, I'd not sweat the small stuff as they say.

jethro, i simply went to napa and got all of my tune up parts. i grabbed plugs, wires, coil, dist cap, points and condenser all for 79 dollars. i trust napa products, and i thought that was a great deal of a bargain

According to my parts books, that's a 63 F100 with a 223 1v engine, built in Lorain, Ohio. 64 F-series started with serial number 445,001 thru 580,000 . Yours 360,616, makes it a mid to late 63.

Should have a different grill.

1963 Grill different from 1964, 64 only has eight rectangles.

It could have had a different grill put on somewhere in it's life. Don't go by that. You go by the serial number. There's no real difference in the engine between those years. All my info come right from Ford and not somebody's word. I'd trust a book first.
