I have an '84 F-150 4X4 with the 300 straight six. The engine compartment caught fire do to a backfire in the carb. It has melted most of my sensors and vacum lines and cant tell whats what. Has anyone taken all that stuff off there engine and installed an older electronic ignition and made it work? I think it would be cheaper to convert than to replace all those sensors. My truck has the TFI-IV computer system. I appreciate any help I can get.
Wow, I didn't know that there was fuel injection that early on the trucks. If you decided to use a carburator, does your block have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. If not, how much pressure does the electric pump put out. The 76 300 I had before I swapped a 302 into it was pretty simple. The stock carb was only a one barrel though. There are aftermarket intake manifolds by Clifford and Offenhauser for use with very small 4v carbs. I'm not sure that you'd be saving money though. Can you find a similar truck in the junkyard to scavenge? I'm not sure what your electronic system is, it sounds kind of like a throttle body system. I believe that the fuel pumps for throttle body don't put out anywhere near the pressure that SEFI systems do. Perhaps a fuel pressure regulator would tame it enough for a carb. I think that retaining the electronic system you have would yield the best fuel economy and power provided it's working right. I'm curious, is this a throttle body setup?
My system has a one barrel carb on it, but it was controlled by the computer. From what I have figured out is that the computer controls mostly the emissions, fuel, and the timing on the distributor. I have allready converted over to an '80's model ignition. It is the Duraspark II system and I have allready got it installed and running fine, actually better than it was before. I installed the distributor, ignition module, coil, plugs, and plug wires from the '80 model all new for $165.00. Alot cheaper than what all the sensors were going to cost not to mention simpler and neater. As for the fuel mileage, I'll just have to wait and see which way it's going to go. I'm going to replace the carb to a 2-barrel, the other seems to load up a little bit when it is idleing. Can't seem to adjust it out, must be something due to not having the computer installed. I do know that it seems to have alot better pickup than before though. If anyone needs to convert over give me a shout and I can pass along the part numbers and info as to what needs to be connected and disconnected. Thanks for your help.
I have an 84 f250 [rated over 8600 gvw] and it came from the factory with no computer [non feedback carb] and no cat. The emissions tag is printed with "non cat..." Mine is the 300 also with the dura spark ignition. So you could look up the emmissions components for this truck to put on another I figure.
