Husband is working on my explorer replacing radius arm. Compressed the spring, but has a problem. The long bolt and nut inside the front suspension frame work, any ideas on how to get to it? Thanks
I'm assuming you're reffering to the bolt in the center of the spring. Let that side of the suspension sag a bit, this will give you room to work above the spring. I think it's 1 and 1/8 inch socket, but what you do is insert a long socket extension down from the top in the center of the spring, attach the socket drive above the top of the spring, get your breaker bar and penetrating oil because this nut will need a bunch of help to break free. Once you get the top nut off you'll have to remove the rest of the bolt.
I just changed my RA bushings a couple of weeks ago on my 92. I may have been just lucky, but a 1 1/8" open end wrench worked for me through the side of the spring. Make sure you let the axles sag enough so you can pull them forward far enough to remove the bushings. I used a come-along to move the axles forward, and also aft for reinstallation. I had to remove the shocks and torsion bar too.
When I changed the Radius arm bushing in my 92, I removed the rivets from the cross member then pulled the cross member back to clear Radius arms, used grade10 bolts to remount cross member, 45minutes from start to finish, did not disturbe front suspension or axle, so did not have to worry about front alignment, good luck
