E40D Trouble.

I know there has been several topics on the E40D, and I think I have read most of them. I have tried most all the tips that were given, and I still got one that is bugging the crap out of me.

First off, the Beast.

91 F150 4X4, 302, E40D.

I have rebuilt a lot of older Auto Trans like C4 and C6, but this is my first edxperience with a Computer Controlled Trans.

What it is doing is when it shifts from First to Second, even at low RPM, it bangs so hard it will snap your kneck. Feels like it is going to take out everything in the Drivetrain. It does it in all gears, but first to second is the worst. If you stomp on it and go through the gears, it nearly shifts normal, but if you try to take it easy, then it does it. I know if you pull it down into second, it bypasses the computer, and it will shift normal.

Here is what I have done so far.

(Trans was out when I bought it.)

Rebuilt Trans. (Clutches, Seals, etc.)
Replaced Shift Position Switch (new, OEM)
Replaced Electronic Solenoid Body (new OEM)

I know the E40D has a bad reputation, and I did look at replacing it with either a C6 or a used E40D, but used E40D in my area are rare, and I am going to sell it as soon as I get the shifting fixed, and do not want to sink a lot of money into it. Gas Prices are killing me, and I need to pick up a Ranger for the Milage.

BTW, nice web sight here and stocked full of good information. I have cured many problems from information given here. This is the first time I have had one that I could not figure out, and needed to post on.

As a side note here, I got a 1978 F100 Ranger, that my Father Inlaw bought new, then I bought it, and have had for the last 12 years. I decided it was time to make it a 4X4, and I put it all together(scavanged a 79 4X4), and decked it all out. I recently put a 400 in it, and find I get too much flex in the frame, so next weekend, the front clip and engine come out, and I am going to channel the frame. I am heading down to look at a drivetrain out of a 82 F150,(the guy says it has a 5 speed OD). and will be adapting it into my 78Chances are, I will be adapting the Fuel Injection as well. Depends on how complete the truck is.

Well it seems to me that tranny is having a Hi pressure problem, maybe caused by an electricl issue.

1º Install a Pressure gauge 0-300 psi at pressure test port.
2º Start engine and read pressure at hot idle, it should be 55-65 psi in Park, Neutral, Drive and Manul second.
3º Drive truck with low gas pedal, pressure should be not more than70-80 psi depends on engine and how heavy is your foot.
4º Perform a WOT acceleration and keep your eyes in gauge, (Someone else driving...) pressure should be 180-190psi

Perform those test and then We'll know...

Thank You, I do appericate it.

I will see what it gives me this weekend. I wondered if this may be the problem, was unsure.

As a follow up on this, I have the problem solved. It turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor. I do still have an issue of it hitting a little harder then I like when it shifts, but it does not try to tear it's self in half anymore. I think the hard shift that is left is either due to a shift kit, or a bad modulator valve.
