Monroe Gas-Magnum Shocks

Monroe Gas-Magnum Shocks
I just put a new set of Monroe Gas-Magnums on my F250 4x4 and despite having the same part numbers as the old ones, they look different and are less harsh.
The old ones bulge like this (I know the site is Russian or something, but scroll down to the yellow Monroes, and look at the upper one) and the new ones are straight, like this (scroll down to the "4x4 Gas-Magnum").
I wonder if Monroe has updated Gas-Magnums with newer technology... they feel remarkably like the Reflexes on my C20. They still damp very effectively, but they have lost the brutal harshness of the old ones, which would pass every little surface imperfection straight through to the rest of the truck. Now I can put my kidney belt back in storage.
Has anyone else noticed this transformation of Gas-Magnums?
