Hello list, new member needing some help. Recently purchased a 2004 Prowler Travel Trailer 23'. Pulling with a 2002 Explorer XLT 4x4 4.0L SOHC V-6. Invoice for Explorer shows it has a 3.55 Ratio Regular Axle. My travel trailer is 4600 lbs. dry weight, I have a class III tow hitch with weight distribution bars and seperate braking system for trailer all on Explorer. When towing trailer, Explorer usually only has 2 adult occupants, 1 child and MINIMAL excess weight. Trailer may have approx. 700 lbs. in storage, most at trailer wheel (axle) position. Based on this, truck is pulling approx. 5300 lbs in trailer weight. I have been told by another forum (RV) that this Explorer based on the Axle Ratio is not designed to pull this weight.-- Imagine this- that's not what the Trailer dealer told me!! Anyhow, am I pushing my limits or overboard in towing and if so, is there something fairly inexpensive to do to make the truck more able to pull this load. Ex: new axle, gears, HD shocks or do I just need to look for another vehicle capable of pulling the load. As you may of already figured, I am not mechanically inclined so any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, based on my last trip towing a minivan from NJ to SC with My 97 Sport, ( https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=379751 ) I don't think you'll have any problems as long as you're careful and pay attention as you drive. The 4.0 had no problem with the weight starting or going uphill, (leaving the AOD tranny in the off position, this also give more engine braking going downhill.) Did your Ex come with the towing package?
You're missing the V6 oil cooler as well as the 3.73 LS rear gears; both were included with the '02 tow package. I think you're right on the ragged edge (or over) of your XLT's towing limit. Only way to know for sure is to load up your TT and have it weighed; you may be in for a nasty shock!
This is off fords web site for 02 explorers 4.0l SOHC,4X4, axle 3.55, GCWR 8000, Max trailer weight for autonatic trans. 3500 LBS. Now so you under stand this GCWR is the weight of both truck and trailer loaded. You don't wont to go over this weight.
