I've got a 97 Sport, I want to tow a tow dolly with a minivan on it, If I recall when you tow with the aod tranny you're suppose to turn off the automatic overdrive, is this correct??
Don't forget...if the vehicle in tow is rear wheel drive, pull it with the rear tires on the dolly or disconnect the drive shaft. Had a friend roast his cougar's trans...
For what it's worth, neither UHaul nor Penske will rent me a tow dolly to be pulled with my Explorer. Both say it has to do with the rollover stuff. This may not be an issue for you, I don't know, especially if you don't have to rent.
Thanks for the feedback, don't have the original owners manual, bought the sport second hand...no manual. Don't have to rent, have a tow dolly available to me. Mason, why wouldn't you tow a long distance?? The sport has a transmission cooler, 3.73 gears, curious why you wouldn't tow... Got ya on putting the free wheels on the rolling asphalt, the van is fwd.
I have a sport and tow a 3500 pound camper. But, I am set up for it too. You should have no problem if you take it ez don't go running 70 mph. I run around 55+/- and everything cool. Just my 2cents.
DO NOT tow with overdrive on this will cause the trans temp to go up and in turn will make the torque converter swell which will rip the front seal on the trans. look ahead as you tow so you can excellerate before your on the hill and can brake while you are coming down a hill. excessive speed uses excessive fuel tow at a safe speed 55 to 60 and relax youll have no problems.
Sweet trip... ran about 60 mph, added about 3 hours to my trip, Looks like 18 mpg the first half of the trip since I ran sans the overdrive. I switched the O/D back on in NC, flat country, still about 18 mpg. that little van was heavy about 5000 lbs gvw. but the explorer ran well. Thanks for all the feed back!!
