Question A Few Questions...

I have a '94 Aero XLT hand-me-down with 119k miles. I love driving it around, not only because it's dependable, but because it's practical as a college student.

My first and main question is, what are some things i can do to increase my fuel economy? I normally get about 16-19 mpg, and i usually drive with the A/C off, but with gas prices going up, there's got to be something more.

My next question is about shocks... I'm tired of the wobbly ride, and knowing that the shocks on there are the original. I know every one recommends Gabriel shocks, but how feasable and how time consuming would a swap be for an amateur mechanic such as myself?

Additionally, what options are out there for alternator upgrades? I don't know what the amp rating was for the OEM alternator on the '94. I have recently installed driving lights and a new sound system (w/o sub), and have noticed that these put a strain on my electrical system. Even the fans for climate control dim my lights when i turn them on

Sorry about my long winded-ness, but any help would be greatly appreciated

I can't help you with the fuel economy, I think i get 12-15, partially because of my driving habits. But from what I've heard, gabriel shocks aren't the best. I have monroes on there now, but I'm gonna get some rancho RS5000's soon i think. If you have the 4.0, the stock alternator is a 95amp. an alternator from, say, a 96' ranger 4.0 automatic, it will be a 130amp, that's what I have and my lights never dim no matter what I do, I also have foglights and a fairly sizable stereo system.

16-19MPG is pretty darned low for the 3.0l . I have an '89 shorty w/4:10 Trak-Lok rear axle and get 22 MPG average (60k average of 20.5 MPG including towing duty), and when asked most people here posted better figures than that.

My engine is very worn (one quart of Mobil-1 every 800 miles), but that's the way I bought it at 141k.

Al S.
