Yeah, check the key, do you get any flashing theft lights at all? Does the key turn the engine over at all? or does it just do nothing? also, this isnt a copy of a key is it?
I have a key that will turn the car on, but wont start the engine. I use it for an extra key, just incase I lock myself out of my truck. It came with it when I bought it. It is for some sort of anti-theft mechanism! Has this key ever started the engine before????
Remote start was not a factory option in 2000 so it had to be a dealer added option, I would suspect a problem between the PATS system and the added remote start system. It sounds like the key is not programed into the PATS system.
In the 99 Ranger that I used to have, I occasionally had problems with one of my keys not working consistently. Usually at the most inconvenient times, the engine just wouldn't crank. Finally figured out that it was the key because my second key would work fine. Eventually, I just got a whole new key programmed and used the glitchy key as a spare unlock key.
I'd either check the PATS system or get another key.
