85 f150 emissions

i live here in the great state of GA in a county where i must pass emissions, and my truck has 86000 original miles on the 351 4v, it has no converters, but the guy i bought it from gave them to me, its got true duals, no smog pump or egr valve. i dont want to put the stuff back on because the performance and mileage increase was so great. If i put on the just the converters is there a way i can pass? like lean out the carburator some and advance the timing a little, i also heard having true duals helps because it can split the readings in half. I dunno, does anyone have any experiance in the same problem i got, and or any tips? i would apperiacite it

Chris ,
Id suggest you call the smog check station and ask what they will look for during the test . Im sure the tailpipe emissions for an 85 model is going to be different than a newer model . Im sure someone will actually look to see if the cats are in place along with all the smog equipment that was originally on the truck new . Where I live in Tn , smog checking hasnt come to town like it has in Nashville . Good luck and let us know what you found out .

I had the same problem with my '82 F150. I swapped out the 300 I6 and put in a 351W. Used an open element air cleaner, dumped the smog pump, kept the EGR, and put true duals with 12 inch cats. The first time thru inspection here in NC, the inspector wanted a heat riser pipe from my manifold to the air cleaner (doesn't make much sense with an open element), but he passed it anyway. Took it to a different place for my next inspection and they passed it, no problem. The inspection sheet showed N/A for EGR and Air Pump.

By the way, you will want to retard the timing a bit to lower the emissions. I put an MSD adjustable in mine and dropped the timing to between 6-8 degrees for the inspection.

Oh, and the 12" cats I bought were $35 each from DynoMax.

I don't think calling an inspection station will do any good. It just depends on how each inspector understands the law; and the law is pretty confusing. I had my truck fail at a Quick 10 for an exhaust leak (which he could not tell me where it was at) and I took it across the street to Tire King where it passed with no problem. And, when I removed my old exhaust system, I did indeed have a small leak in the pipe behind the muffler.

Good luck,

Slik

Slik,
how/where did you get a hold of cats for $35 each? I know you mentioned DynoMax, but did you buy them direct, or if from a shop, which one? I've been looking for some cats, and I can't seem to find them cheaper than about $80 a piece.

thanks!

I live in Indiana. In indiana if you purchase heavy duty truck plates your truck is exempt from emission testing. Our standard plate is rated for a gross weight of 7000lbs. Heavy duty plates are 11000lbs. The extra cost is about $70 here. Some states use B and C class ratings to describe the above.

I did a search on Cats and found someone on the net that sold DynoMax. I did not see the $35 ones listed, but when I called the guy and talked over what I wanted, he suggested the $35 units (I was ready to buy the $80 ones, but he talked me out of it). I don't remember if I saved the invoice, but if I did, it is in the truck and I will look for it tomorrow.

I purchased my cats from either Discount Converters Ltd which you can find on the net at www.discountconverter.com or call 1-888-651-0770; or I got them from A-1 Performance (I'm pretty sure that's who I called, but they look like they may be the same folks) at www.a-1performance.com, 1-888-996-0303.

Good luck,

Slik

Where do you live in Tennessee? I live in Roberston county now, but am moving to Cookville in the summer and need to find out if they have emmissions checks. Robertson doesn't, and I have removed cats and run true dual so it probably won't ask if they do. Just wondering if you'd know.

Slik,
Thanks for the info on the cat shops... I'll give them a look as soon as I'm ready to replace my exhaust (again)
