I purchased a used 2000 ranger recently and today when washing it by chance i noticed i had a spare tire lock. The problem is that i dont have any key and the dealer i bought it from wasn't any help when i called them. I'm wondering if there is any way to get a key made or to easily remove the lock without damaging anything. I am making a 500 mile trip in 2 weeks so i would like to get this resolved asap. thanks
There is only one key for those things and it usually is in the little black book cover that comes with the truck, if not look behind the plastic thing betweenthe seats that covers the jack and tools, it might be taped inside the plastic cover, the upside is that they only cost ten bucks so if you just drill out the lock and remove it then put a new one in you are good to go. LOcksmith will cost you more for sure. Unless you know one or can do it yourself.
It's a special key with a long handle...my lock was rusted and wouldn't come out last year so I drilled it out with a 1/2" bit. Haven't got back to the dealer to get a new key and lock, yet...probably never will.
You can purchase the long key blank from a FORD dealer for about $3-5.00 (mine cost $3.00). Then get the numbers off the lock (located around the outer edge of the lock where the key goes in and take the numbers and key blank to a good locksmith. He will be able to cut a key from the numbers. My new key (blank and cut cost $8.00)
