The wife and I are both EMTs of are VFD and we were coming back from a call the other night and she decided to ride up front on the way back(I was driving). I noticed that she was looking at the doghouse that covers the motor compartment (7.3 PSD), I thought at first that she was looking at all the radios switches lights that cover the housing, then I realized it was all the noise that was coming from that area that caught her attention. I kind a laughed and said it's not like a V10 is it. She asked if the pickups are that noisy I told her that they are a little better but not much. Her only other comment was we won't have one any time soon, I said no problem.

She has heard a lot of diesels in camp grounds but always thought they were quiet in the cab .
Diesels are too noisy and V10's are too quiet! I REALLY want to pull the muffler off my new V10 F250 but my daughter will be getting it so I will have to wait for my 2006 F350 in almost a year......
Ya, quiet and SMOOTH! I've got almost 500 miles on my 05 F350 and I still find myself looking at the tach at stoplights to see if it is still running. But if that doesn't work I can always watch the gas gauge.

the gas gauge method is what I do too.....................
NOT funny! I was not all that concerned about how my gas gauge was moving until I realized how big the fuel tank is....... 38 gallons!!!!!!!! Taller tires are coming and that'll hopefully minimize the now-questionable choice of the 4.30 axle ratio. Final (6th) gear on the 6 speed is 0.72 to 1. How about final (5th) on the automatic?
Yes, 6th IS overdrive! In reality and on the shifter. 1st is 5.79 to 1 and marked "Low" on the shifter, 2nd is 3.31 to 1 and marked "1st", 3rd is 2.10 to 1 and marked "2nd", 4th is 1.31 to 1 and marked "3rd, 5th is 1 to 1 and marked "4th", 6th is 0.72 (any number here below 1.00 is by definition overdrive) to 1 and marked "OD". Maybe you are thinking about Vettes and F bodies that are 1 to 1 in 4th and overdrive in 5th AND 6th. I am asking about how the automatic's final gear is geared so I can compare the rpm I am turning to what they are turning at the same speed, assuming same everything else, like axle ratio, tire diameter, etc.
Hey RVpuller nice to see some other EMS folks around here. Im a Paramedic and my wife is an EMT. She has no problems with the Diesel though. She wants an older 7.3L X to replace her Mitsubishi.
No, I wasnt thinking about anything but the tranny. The ZF-5 speed in the '96 has essentially the same set-up minus the Low gear select. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th(1:1), and OD(5th)
0.72:1 is Fords typical OD in each of the standard and both the 4R100 and 5R110 from what I can see in each of the 99 to present order guides. But for some reason I remember a trans or two that were 0.74:1, minor difference, but now I got to go look it up because my CRS is kicking in hard!
Looking at those automatics' first gear numbers, I can see why with my 4.30 and 6 speed, I can take off from a dead stop in 3rd as if that was the correct gear for it. Maybe with the taller tires all of my choices will make more sense.
I just got some BFG 315/70 x 17's on the rear (five sizes bigger than the stock 265/70's and on the stock rims just fine) and it looks like they will fit on the front and will eventually get there with 37/12.5 x 17's on back. I will wait a while and get some use out of the stock tires up front first. The truck seems geared better now for all-around driving after decreasing my rpm by 8%/raising my rear tire diameter by 8%. I am running 1100 rpm at 35 mph indicated/37.8 mph actual in 6th so it will be 2200 rpm at 70 mph indicated/75.6 mph actual. 2200 rpm at 75.6 sounds about perfect (no load carried or towed) but when the 37's go on that rpm will drop about 100 more.
