I am attempting to change my steering gear and I can't get the pitman arm off the gear box. I have a pitman arm puller and it still won't budge. Do I need to disconnect the pitman arm from the tie rod first or disconnect the tie rods or is mine just really stuck. Any help I can get will be appreciated. thanks
You don't neccessarily have to disconnect it first. Take a small propane torch and direct the heat on the pitman arm. Be careful not to burn up any wires or hoses. Also be careful not to put too much heat towards the seal around the shaft. The idea here is to get the pitman arm to expand around the steering shaft. Do this while you have the puller in place with tension on it. After a fair amount of heat is applied, give it a whack with a hammer. It should drop right off onto the floor. Good luck.
I had the same problem when I changed the arm on my '92 F-150. I actually broke the 'screw' part of the puller! I was hanging on it with a long pipe and it wouldnt budge. After it broke there was still pressure on it so I took a die grinder and ground all the way through it until it popped. If you need to save the arm this won't work for you though. Like Scott said, if you put some heat to it it should come off, but I didn't want to risk melting a seal in the box.
Good Luck!
