80's Cruise control swap to include resume.

I was curious if anyone that has factory cruise or has added factory cruise has considered retrofitting later model parts (80 - 86) to gain the resume feature. I have an 80 model wheel in my truck and it has the resume feature, and it's not in the way or any thing like that, but I thought it would be cool if it worked.
I've done a little experimenting so far. I changed my amplifier for an early 80's model. The off and on button still worked correctly. The resume and coast button work correctly. However the set button does not. When you press the set button the truck gains about 7 or 8 miles more than where you set it before it levels off and actualy cruises.
Anyone have any bright ideas? Is this even possible?

That problem is listed in the trouble-shooting guide

Check the speedo cable electronic speed actuator (the thing with 2-wires)

The trouble is, when I take the 80 model amp out and plug back in the 79 model amp, the set button works like it is supposed to. Do you think by chance the speed sensor and amp need to both be from an 80 model?

Mil1on, We had a miscomunication some where let me start from square one so we can sort this out.
I installed a complete 79 cruise system in to my 73. It took a couple of wiring modifications to the collum, and to the horn relay, but everything worked good.
Next, I put an 80 model truck steering wheel and horn pad on my 79 model collum. Everything worked good just like it did before. Excpet, now I have the extra button on the horn pad which is Resume.
Then I unplugged my 79 model amplifier, and replaced it with an 80 model amplifier. Everything including the resume button worked except when you push the set button to turn set the cruise speed, the truck would speed up 7 to 8 miles faster than where I had originally set it before it leveled off and maintained speed.
Just to double check that nothing was wrong as far as the original 79 components, I unplugged the 80 model amp and went back to the 79 model amp.
Now everything works right again, except the resume button which does not work at all.
Do you have any ideas?
Mike

Read me the numbers off both amplifiers (black Boxes).

Because the resume was another feature in the 80's I'm positive the circuitry had changed slightly.

I can't think of any other component that would be affect the system.

Everything else is mechanical.

There is a guide for figuring out what causes the speed to change.

Perhaps that feature was shot in the 80's amplifier ?

Dennis, The only thing I can think of is the resume feature in the later model box is shot like you suggest. I actually have 3 boxes on hand, and here are the numbers:
79 box- D7A79D844
80 box- D9AF9D844
Mid 80's box- EOAF9D844

OK. Now what? Is the resume just not doable in this case, or do I have the wrong box or what?

ok. So, it's your opinion that I simply have a bad resume box? If that's the case....this should be an easy fix and upgrade.

Mil1ton & Doc, are you guys saying that doc has a bad black Box? And that an 80 Amp should work for doc's application?

It's Mil1ion (no T)

Yes,a GOOD amp box for an 80 with a resume feature will fix it.

Dennis, I have a question. I like Mike have just put in cruise control in my 79 F-100. After the installation I finds that my brake pedal is lower, about 1". the brakes still work, but I have to press them down a lot closer to the floor. what do you think caused this change?
