Hey i drive a 94 ranger 2.3L 4 speed automatic. It currently has 171,000 miles on it and yesterday i noticed some shifting problems. It was shifting real slow from 2nd to 3rd and the rpms would get up to about 3 or 4 before i would have to let off the throttle and let it shift. This morning driving to school it seemed perfectly fine but driving home it was shifting funny. It only does this when im driving real slow like from a stop sign and i tested it out. I checked the fluid and it was full. I got on the main roads and floored it and it shifted good until 3rd to 4th. A few months ago the vaccum modulator went bad and i replaced that and it shifted oh so perfect until now. Im not too sure when the filter was replaced or when the converter was flushed cause it was my dads before i got it about a year ago. So help me out please. I also have another question about a possible swap. I have a tranny that came out of an 88 mustang 2.3 L 4 speed automatic. It has about 59,000 miles on it would I be able to do a swap? Thanks.
Not sure on swap there.
Reason I say that is ford changed the 5speed from a 2 piece bellhousing to a one piece somewhere around the 90's range.
When they did so I hear they also changed the side the starter bolted on at from passenger to drivers side.
Not sure if this true or not but look and see if they mount on the same side as each other if so it should swap.
I used an 87 stang 4cyl tranny in my ranger when the transfer case died to keep it rolling till i could fix it properly no problems.
