I have a 92 F150 4x4 300/5spd. As I was driving yesterday,I felt something "bang" on the shifter. The tranny started making a banging noise when I pushed in the clutch. Still did it in neutral. In first or second ,,under power,,No noise. Pulled the tranny top cover off and could see chipped teeth on the first cluster gear. Took the trans out and it has 'lots' of movement in the input shaft. Bearing seems ok. Is there a shim behind the input shaft housing? I must get this truck running ASAP. Any help will be appreciated.
Rick,
Ive looked at the exploded views I have of that tranny , I couldnt see any shims and no mention was made of one . The diagrams I have arent the best . It shows checking the endplay of the output shaft . Im pretty sure the input shaft and the countershafts have to sit fairly snug ? Id ask the Ford Parts guy if he will print you off an exploded view of the tranny . Plus they will know if there are any shims for that part of the tranny . Sorry I couldnt be of more help ,
Paul
Paul, I have a copies of the parts dept. exploded view of this trans, with part numbers, but I can't tell anything from them either.
I had a Mustang GT w/5spd that came apart like this. I bought a shim pack from Ford,,set the end play on the input shaft,,put it back together,,every thing worked fine. I'm going to the dealer this morning to see what they have to say.
Thanks Paul
