Ford I-six trivia

This is interesting: The Peterson's Ford Tune-up and Repair book (copyright, 1979) says that once the Ford 170, 200, and 250 cubic inch inline sixes were designated as "Small 6s," whereas the 240 and its stroked bigger brother, the 300 inch, were called the Big 6s." That brings up an interesting point: Could these mean small-block six and big-block six? Also notes that the 240 (which was used in some Ford cars) was dropped because they could not certify it for NOx emissions. I'll take the 300 inch since it develops power at a much lower RPM than did the 240--probably due to the stroke job.

I had a fullsize 1965 Ford station wagon that had a 240. I loved the sound of the exhaust on that car.

What was the piston diameter on the 240?
It may be the same as on the 300...

Bore on both engines is 4.00. It is well established that the 300 is a stroked 240. But I just learned something fascinating about the 300 which I am putting in a new post today (1/10/00) titled "Hot Rodding 300 inch sixes" in the Hot Rodding message board at this ford-trucks site.
