I have 50,000 miles on my 2003 Excursion 6.0L diesel.
How do I drain/refill or flush the cooling system?
I assume there is a drain on the radiator, but how and where do I drain the block (anyone have pictures)? The manual says I can flush with an old-style prestone flushing system to "back-flush" the system, but no manuals of which hose to splice into can be found.
If I drain, refill with water, drain, refill with water a couple of times... will this work? Knowing that the capacity is 27.5 qts, I just add 50% total coolant and it will mix with the water in the block... then just add 50/50 to bring up to level?
How do people use or drain out tap water then refill with ONLY distilled water?
draining the 6.0 one of the men will have to help. as to filling at work in the dealersip i use a tool called a air lift. by useing a air compresser, it puts a total vac. on the system then by useing bottles with a 50/50 mix in them refill to full cap. with out even running the motor just like the factory. start to finish a fill takes about 10 mins as the vac. pulls untill nothing is left then it's full any way. keep any animals out of the area as dogs like the sweet taste of antifreeze and it kills them. good luck.
I'm waiting for anybody to chime in also. I'm curious if the engine block has any drain plugs. Maybe I'll crawl under my truck this weekend to take a peek.
try and pull off the lower rad hose and let as much as you can out. when you refill make sure your mix is 50/50 to much is no good as is not enough. when filling the old way let it run in from the rad. slowly before you start it. then keep adding untill full.
you just might be better off letting a fast lube shop do it
