Does anyone have any experience with high performance computer modules in fords? Do they really improve the performance that much? If so, what brand..Hypertech, JET, ADS, etc. I was also looking at the B&M Shift Plus shift improver that plugs into the wiring harness (sure beats dropping the valve body and getting dirty). Any good? My truck is a '92 Flareside 4x4 351 E4OD with a 4" lift and 33" tires. I removed the second catalytic converter and installed a 3" flowmaster system (which made a huge improvement in power), but otherwise it is stock.
When you say you removed the second cat and then added the 3 inch flowmaster, does this mean your truck had 2 cats. Mine has a pre-heater and then the cat. Is it possible you removed the cat and left the preheater or is the mechanic at the garage giving me a line of bull about a preheater and a cat. I thought it was 2 cats when I asked him the question.
Honestly, I dont't know what the heck they are, I just assumed they were both cats. I did leave the first one in place and just replaced the second one with a straight peice of 3" pipe. I only left the first one in place because from past experience, the 3" flowmaster is too loud without a cat(my preference) and it is 3" in and out which I think is sufficient. Now you've got me thinking, I'll have to look into that pre-heater thing.
i was told that the first one was a converter, and the second a resinator, i removed the second one, it looked like a cat inside, i installed a 3" flowmaster with dual tails. later when i changed the motor, i punched out the first one, it was definutely a converter. the new motor is modified and it sounds great! on the module i tried a jet module, i couldnt get a good conection at the computer service port, so i didn't use it, four wheeler or one of those mags had the same problem they got the manufacturer of the module to retin the service port terminals. from the info i've seen i think jet may be the best choice.
Yes A chip is worth the $$$. I have a Superchip( not the ADS SUPERCHIP) AND LOVE IT. As far as I know form there web site www.superchips.com it is the best thing i have upgraded on my truck. Besides the amsoil air filter and jacobs electonics pro street ignition and undredriven pullys. It changed the performance gratly and the drivablity was improved. It changes the shift points and firms them up, and works throughout the rpm range not just at wide open.
i have determined that they are both cats. wether you can remove one or not depends on your states emisions laws and the guy doing the testing. Here in PA the enhanced emisions tests are just starting to come into effect. I am told that there will be a visual inspection of all emisions equipment. So the guy is supposed to look under the truck and see if there is a cat there. Well if he sees one, and doesn't know there is supposed to be two, I guess you'd pass, as long as your engine burns clean of course. Either way, I put less than 5k miles on a year so I'm exempt from emision testing.
Some places in California have double cats, but I don't know about our era of trucks. I think the first one is a resonator and the second being a cat
Powermodules are worth their money. I have a Hypertech which I have had for about 4.5-5 years. It gains about 20-25 hp and about 30 in torque. The only drawback is, you have to run 91-92 octane.
DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT BUY A JET CHIP. GARBAGE.
If you think you really want one, send me about $10.00 for UPS and your address and you can have an almost-new JET module, complete.
Then, you too, can find out why I always bash JET every chance I get.

hey guys, don't mean to butt in your conversation, but i have a hypertech power module for a 1990 f150/f250/bronco that had a 5 spd. standard and a 302 V8, part #600021, if anyone is interested in this $300 paper weight, then let me know, i will let it go for a fraction of what i paid. i sold the truck, and have no use for it anymore. thanks again for your time.
I have an 89 F150 with the I-6. It also has 2 cats. One is for NOx emissions, and the other is for hydro-carbons, I think in that order. In Ct, it would be impossible to pass without either one of the Cat's because they are supposed to do a visual. You may get lucky though and get a lazy worker who doesn't check. I have heard about this.
Has anyone had a good experience with any chip?
