Question 1997 Expy EB Mach sub replacement [missing driver?]

Hi everyone.

I picked up a used 1997 Expedition EB on the weekend. Its in good mechanical shape, one owner, full service history, etc. No problems with it so far except for the audio.

The short version:

Missing Driver from the subwoofer, can I replace with an 8" 4 ohm sub and place that back within the ford enclosure.

The long version.

I have the MACH system with the 6 CD Changer and the second row audio controls.

The subwoofer seemed dead and what was left of the speakers had no bass at all. I can get some bass from the door speakers if I max out the bass on the head unit.

Tonight I took off the rear end bezel for the sub and discovered the driver was removed from the subwoofer.

Everything else is there, the grill, mounting screws, the enclosure with insulation and the amp, just no driver. The two leads are still there that runs to the driver/sub.

I'll talk to the previous owner to see what happened here, I'm guessing that the unit was :

A. Stolen while in for service?
B. Was blown out in the past, and the previous owner didn't want to spend $$$ to get ford to replace it.
C. Previous owner removed it.

At this point it doesn't matter, and its not a deal breaker for me.

So my question is, can I get a new 8" 4 ohm sub, and drop it back into the enclosure, hook up the leads and snap it back in?

I know it won't be an ideal solution but I need something temporary for now. I'll probably end up replacing the whole audio setup in a few months.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Memphis Audio makes a replacement subwoofer (about 80 dollars)that fits perfectly...all you to do is drill the 4 holes to mount it between the current four holes. In other words, drill a new hole between each factory hole. Cut the factory connectors off the wires, strip them back a little, twist them, and attach them to the speaker. The speaker has some type of spring-lock on it's connecting point.

Thanks I'll check them out.

I have a co-worker whos bringing in a 8" driver for me to test the unit to make sure the wiring and the amp still work. After proving that its a matter of getting a aftermarket unit that can fit flush and still maintain OEM appearance once the Mach1 sub panel is reinstalled.

I'll give a call to memphis audio to see what they have in stock.

Thanks again.
