Usually you can smell them. They smell like rotten eggs...or did in the past.
I would imagine now that sensors in the exhaust will let you know if the "cat' is not performing to specifications.

Thanks Monsta. This is my problem. I have check engine codes p0153, p0155 and p1151. All of these codes are dealing with the oxygen sensor on the drivers side I believe. I changed both sensors about two months ago when I received other check engine codes about both sensors. Turns out it was the rubber elbow on the PCV line that always breaks apart. (I learned that on this site) Now I am trying to figure out what is behined these three codes. I reset my computer, but the codes keep coming back. The 97 runs great, but I can't figure out why these three codes keep popping up. I thought it might be my catalytic converter acting up. Monsta, is there a specific code for the catalytic converter? Also, do you have any ideas what could be behined these codes?
